Phra Nangphya Pitsanulok Amulet
Phra Nangphya amulet is the second most famous of Benjapakee, top 5 amulets of Thailand. Beautiful amulet with an image of Lord Buddha created in Ayuttaya era; Thai people name them as “Queen of Thailand Amulets”. Phra Nangphya Amulets are very famous for strong charm and attraction for being worn by women and for weapon proof, wealth and good fortune for being worn by men.
The History of the amulets “Phra Nangphya” are started from Wat Nangphya of Pitsanulok Province which is the place these amulets were keep underground in many old pagodas. Phra Nangphya Amulets have the image of Buddha meditating in the subduing Mara posture. This winning over evil Mara means victorious from all evils when Lord Buddha have enlightened. The image is triangle shaped and has no base line, no frame like other amulets.
Pitsanulok is a town located in east side and was built around Wat Juramanee (Build by Khom). (Khom = Cambodian). This town was used to be the southern town at front line for war in Sukothai era. Until the Ayuttaya era, Pitsanulok changed to be the north town in front line in battle with Burma and Chiangmai. That time was Kingdom of Phra Mahadhumaracha II ( Phraya Lerthai ), Phra Mahadhumaracha III ( PhraMahadhumaracha Pitsanulok ), Phra Mahadhumaracha IV ( Phraya Barnmueng ).
Wat Nangphya was situated next to Wat Ratchaburana, Phitsanulok. Wat Ratchaburana was built by King Maha Thammaracha of Sri Ayuttaya Capital during his rule of Phitsanulok. “Wat Nangphya” was built by “Phra Wisut Kasattri”, his wife around B.E. 2095-2100 (1552-1557A.D). Both Wats originally were on the same piece of land.
In B.E.2106 there was a war and Burmese troops surround Pitsanulok. At this time and reason Phra Nangphya Amulets were created was to give to all soldiers against Burmese invasion. In B.E.2112 Ayuttaya lost to Burma, Phra Nangphya amulets were given to all people and troops for motivation to gain freedom back from Burma.
Wat Nangphya was situated next to Wat Ratchaburana, Phitsanulok. Both Wats originally were on the same piece of land. Later a road was built through it at the middle and separated the Wats(temples) from each other. The Pagoda was destroyed and cleaned, and the Buddha amulets in triangular shape were found. The Buddha amulets circle called them “Phra Nangphya” and it is believed that “Phra Wisut Kasattri” has made these “Phra Nangphya” amulets had encased them in the relic chambers of the Jaydee(pagoda).
“Phra Nangphya” Amulets are one of the Buddha amulets produced during the end of Sukhothai era, around 550 year the Kru (relic chamber) was opened up from Wat Nangphya, Phitsanulok province, around B.E.2442-2444 for the first time. Last time they found again in B.E.2487. There are the Buddha amulets of earth material mixed with flower petals, gravels and sand. The texture is rather coarse, with little gravels and sand. They were in 4 colors, yellow, red, green and black. The prints can be classified in to 6 prints. In addition to being the Nangphya family, famous for Buddhist power on Charming and being safe from all dangers, the Nangphya Buddha amulets are excellent for not being killed by any weapon.
The other temples Wat Rathchaburana, Wat Cheepakao, Wat Poh, Wat Sateer, Wat Suthsawad, and Wat Rathchakruth also made all Phra Nangphya Pim(mold type) amulets. Phra Nangphya amulets made into different skin type : Din Pao (Burn Clay), Phong Bailarn ( Ash from Leaf ), Phong Hin ( Ash from Rock ). There are 8 Pim (mold) of Nang Phya Pitsanulok : Pim Yai Kaokhong, Pim Yai Kaothrong, Pim Sukathi, Pim Aokfab, Pim Aokthung, Pim Aoknoon, Pim Khanaonsukothai and Pim Khanonayuttaya.
In B.E.2444 King Rama V Phrabath Somdej Phrajulajomgaojaoyuhua visited Wat Nangphya, and people were preparing the ceremony there at the temple. Once the villagers dig ground to build a base, they found many of Phra Nangphya amulets hidden there. The abbot of Wat Nangphya has gathered all of them and gives to King Rama V. Our King then gave Phra Nangphya amulets to his assistants, followers, and everyone who serve the King. There were some left and the King brought them back to Bangkok and keeps them in Wat Intraviharn temple.

Phra Nangphya become one of the most famous amulets in Thailand in the set of Benjapakee, the amulets are old and beautiful with an art of Pitsanulok.
